June saw the successful launch of the first Norfolk Festival of Volunteering. This aimed to raise awareness of volunteering and to help not for profit groups across the county recruit new volunteers. It complemented Volunteers’ Week, which is an annual opportunity to thank and celebrate existing volunteers. 

The initiative was the brainchild of the cross-sector Norfolk Vision for Volunteering group and coordinated by Voluntary Norfolk with the help of many partners. 

Approximately 2,800 people attended nine public events, and 135 organisations took up the opportunity to be involved in these volunteer fairs, drop-ins, online information session and a webinar. Partners across Norfolk took on the local organisation of events in Kings Lynn, Cromer, Dersingham and Great Yarmouth. The DWP organised events at Job Centres and several organisations organised internal events for their volunteers. 

The flagship event, the Volunteer Extravaganza at The Forum, organised by Voluntary Norfolk for the third consecutive year, featured 68 voluntary, community and social enterprises. Approximately 2000 people visited over the day. 

The events were popular and well received – some of the comments received were 

• A good opportunity to invite those interested in volunteering to come have a conversation, and answer questions.  

• As well as meeting potential volunteers, it was an excellent networking opportunity where we made valuable connections with other organisations and individuals who may be able to support us in a range of different ways.  

• The opportunity to educate people about the work of [the charity]. Time and opportunity to network with other charities and organisations. A fun, positive experience with like-minded people. Media attention to showcase the charity’s work.   

• Everybody is a vital cog, it’s about shared ownership and shared experience (volunteer) 

• What makes me come every Friday morning rain or shine is that I let go of a load of stress every week.  I turn up in a good mood, and leave in a better mood.  EVERY WEEK! (volunteer) 

Volunteering was also promoted through other channels such as the Royal Norfolk Show, in the local press and media, and through social media posts.
